Cuba University

Founded in 1728, the University of Havana, located district of Havana, is the oldest of them all. It was previously named as Real Y Pontifiia Universitad de San Geronimo de la Habana and got its authorization to operate from Pope Innocent XIII and King V of Spain. In the years prior to the revolution, it nurtured an anti-Batista group. The students wanted and fought for a better Cuba and for a few years in the Batista era, the University of Havana was closed down.

The ministry of higher education is responsible for the policy and the running of the universities in Cuba. They decide about the courses as well as the methods of learning/teaching. The Universities also operate research centres for the benefit of the Cuban nation for example the ecological agriculture program.

Both foreign students and nationals can attend courses at tertiary level. Gender equality prevails in socialist Cuba as half of its graduates are women. The universities are well distributed over the island and distance learning courses are delivered to workers wanting to further their studies and knowledge in the evening.

However, it should be stressed that it is only after the student has his/her basic secondary leaving certificate that she/he can gain entrance at university level. His/her acceptance as student depends on his/her school file where is recorded his Cumulative School File (CSL) relating not only his /her academic achievement but also all details concerning his/her affiliation and adherence to the communist party and its ideology. His/her failure to satisfy the state may lead the student denial to tertiary education and career possibilities though the constitution guaranties every one the right to education.
